PHASED ARRAY + TOFD

These techniques are mainly used for accurate dimensioning and recording of existing discontinuities in equipment.

These are techniques of the ultrasound method.

The Phased-array allows the scanning of the region of interest by ultrasound beams “constructed” according to the inspection requirement, incidents with various angles and exit points, which makes the technique more sensitive (detection) and precise (dimensioning), than the examination by the conventional technique that inspects the region of interest only by beams of 45, 60 and 70º. The inspection results are stored, and state-of-the-art software with great processing and storage capacity, presents the data in views A, B, C and S-scan, which allows the analysis of the results during and after the inspection, in addition to the record for future monitoring of the evolution of discontinuities.

This record is also used to replace inspection by radiography, in accordance with worldwide known standards, such as Code Case 2235 of ASME.

The TOFD is a technique based on the detection of “diffracted waves at the ends of discontinuities”. This technique is sensitive and also allows the precise dimensioning of discontinuities.
